UWC Convocation Election Results

UWC wishes its recently-elected Council members, Judge Nathan Erasmus and Dr Llewellyn MacMaster, and re-elected Convocation President Mr Songezo Maqula, well as they take up their respective roles in guiding the institution.

On Saturday, 03 June 2017 Judge Nathan Erasmus and Dr Llewellyn MacMaster were elected as Convocation members to serve on the Council of the University of the Western Cape, while Mr Songezo Maqula was re-elected unopposed as the President of the UWC Convocation.

Judge Erasmus and Dr MacMaster will serve on the Council from 1 December 2017 to 30 November 2020 and Mr  Maqula will lead the Convocation until the next Convocation AGM in 2018.

The Convocation includes all UWC graduates (degree holders only), academic employees (currently employed on a permanent basis or on contract for a period of one year or more), the Rector, Deputy Vice-Chancellors, Registrar, Executive Directors and the Director of Library Service, two members of Council appointed to Senate, as well as those persons who were members of the Convocation at the commencement of the current UWC Statute.

Judge Erasmus obtained his B.luris and LLB degrees from UWC and is a Judge of the High Court of South Africa and a founder member of Advocates for Transformation. Dr MacMaster obtained his undergraduate degree and honours in theology at UWC before completing his masters and doctorate degrees at Stellenbosch University, where he manages the Civil Society Relations: Division of Social Impact[A1] .

Convocation President Mr Maqula, who completed his BA degree in Public Administration and Honours in Political Studies at UWC, is also a former SRC President, and a strong advocate of social justice.

Speaking at the AGM, Professor Tyrone Pretorius, UWC’s Rector and Vice-Chancellor, presented the University’s new Institutional Operating Plan 2016-2020, and highlighted academic and research achievements of the University,current and future capital projects, and UWC’s future goals.

Mr Maqula also delivered the Convocation’s annual report, highlighting the work that has been done by Convocation members in various communities and the challenges they have encountered, and made recommendations on matters that need to be taken to Council.

Convocation members also added their voices to recommendations to Council, including the issue of food security for students, increasing part-time programme offerings, working with the Alumni Office and UWC Foundation to source funding,  and making use of technology to encourage more alumni  to be involved in activities to support their alma mater.

UWC wishes the new Convocation President and Council representatives well in their roles, as they continue to elevate the reputation and stature of the institution.
