Author: Aidan van den Heever

As the University of the Western Cape celebrates its 60th Anniversary, the DVC: Academic hosted  the 3rd Annual Schools’ Recognition and Awards Breakfast, which fosters strong relationships with top feeder and community engagement schools.

13 March 2020

Every year the University of the Western Cape (UWC) receives thousands of applications from young hopeful learners across Africa - and as the University celebrates its 60th anniversary, the Institution continues to change the lives of students, one graduate at a time.

On Friday 13 March 2020, the office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic honoured and rewarded its top 50 feeder schools and its top five community engagement schools at a special ceremony on the UWC campus.

The top 10 feeder schools for 2020 are;

  1. The Settlers High School
  2. Fairbairn College
  3. Spine Road High School
  4. Mondale High School
  5. Parow High School
  6. Pinelands High School
  7. Livingstone High School
  8. Norman Henshilwood High School
  9. Groote Schuur High School
  10. De Kuilen High School

The University invited the Principals and Life Orientation educators of the relevant schools to learn more about UWC’s undergraduate programmes and its focus on excellence in learning and teaching for student success, from a systematic and faculty perspective.

UWC’s Acting Rector and Vice-Chancellor, and Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic, Professor Vivienne Lawack, said the 3rd Annual Schools’ Recognition and Awards Breakfast fosters strong relationships with the University's top feeder schools, and schools that are involved in UWC’s community engagement projects.

“It is a pleasure to host our Annual Schools’ Recognition and Awards Breakfast at UWC. In its six decades of existence, UWC has conferred hundreds of thousands of degrees to students, including an Honorary Doctorate to the former President Nelson Mandela. We started this event in March 2018 as a means of recognising and rewarding exceptional schools, thanking them for their contribution to UWC and the communities we serve,” Professor Lawack explained.

“I know that some schools display their certificates proudly on-site, and this event allows for a relaxing atmosphere where we can discuss challenges and opportunities that schools may have. I look forward to hosting this event in the year in which we are celebrating our 60th year of existence, both as Acting Rector and as Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic.”

The Recognition and Awards Breakfast also provides UWC’s seven faculties with the chance to showcase themselves in the lead up to the University’s Open Day, which happens in May every year.
