The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has begun its search for a new head coach for its Varsity Cup rugby team.

With all university sports competitions suspended for the rest of the year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, UWC Rugby has retained its status among the elite in the most prestigious university rugby tournament in the country.

The position, a fixed-term contract, was left vacant late last year after the sudden passing away of Chester Williams. Williams was replaced by his assistant coach Lionel Langenhoven on an interim basis until the end of the 2020 Varsity Cup season.

“Now that the season is over, he will move back to his assistant coach post, but is also welcome to apply for the head coach vacancy,” explained Mandla Gagayi, Director of UWC Sport Administration.

The primary purpose of the job is to coordinate, manage and administer coaching programmes as envisaged within Sport Administration's strategic plan, as well as to recruit and manage team coaches and players for UWC Rugby.

UWC is the first and only historically disadvantaged institution to have qualified for the FNB Varsity Cup, and the new coach will have the task of ensuring that the University maintains its status, among other goals that are linked to the development of its rugby.
