UWC Ladies football club crowned Safa Cape Town Coca-Cola Cup Champions

UWC Ladies football club lifted the Safa (South African Football Association) Cape Town Coca-Cola Cup after beating Cape Town Roses 4-3 at the Phillipi Stadium on Saturday 12 October 2013

The final got off to a fierce start, with both teams eager to score first and display their dominance. Both teams showed why they had earned a spot in the final on the day. But it was Roses who opened the score sheet with the help of striker Nandipha Booi to make the score 1-0.

Their 1-0 lead was short-lived however, as UWC left wing and Banyana Banyana player, Leandra Smeda equalised, displaying superior dribbling skills to beat three players in the box to score.

In the 40th minute, Mantombi Jingqi scored from the penalty spot after a handball in the penalty box, making it  2-1 to UWC. Minutes before halftime Smeda scored her second goal of the match, this time with her left boot. UWC followed with another goal courtesy of number 16, Rachel Sebati, who tapped in a goal when a shot from Smeda was deflected.

But four goals from UWC did not stop Roses from applying the pressure, and they did well to exploit UWC’s defensive weak points. Roses scored two goals in the second half, making it 4-3, but it was too little too late.

UWC Ladies Head Coach Jerry Laka said this was a moment they had been waiting for. “Winning this match was a great moment for us. We lost to Roses last week in a league match and this was payback time. The girls wanted to take revenge,” he said.

Laka said the team focused on keeping possession and used their passing combinations to their advantage.

Laka mentioned in particular Smeda’s performance, saying it was evident to all why she is a striker in the national squad.

“We have also qualified for the University Club Championships in December, so we will go back and prepare for this competition. We will also focus on the league for next year, as it is our aim is to win this as well,” he said.
