UWC Ladies win Bronze at AU Volleyball Championships
The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is proud to announce the achievement of their ladies Volleyball team – whose excellent efforts won them a bronze medal at the African Union Volleyball championships in Namibia in December 2016.
UWC Volleyball coach Elmien Cloete said the team’s performance exceeded even her expectations.
“This was our very first time in the competition, and we knew that the standard of volleyball in our neighbouring countries is very high, so the goal of the team was to play to the best of their abilities,” she said.
The toughest game in the competition, Cloete noted, was the semi-final against the defending champions of 2015, Mafolofolo from Botswana – in which UWC Ladies lost 3 – 0. But the ladies rallied and went on to win the bronze medal match 3 – 0 against the Zimbabweans.
Team captain Bejancka Della put on an outstanding performance throughout the competition. “She played every match and did well to remain calm in the most intense moments,” Cloete said.
The UWC Ladies Volleyball team have qualified for the African Continentals (Club Champs) which is a stepping stone to the World Club Champ Qualifiers in 2017.
“UWC’s Head of Sport, Mandla Gagayi, always believed in us and showed his full support – this is what helps us perform and do well on the court as well,” Cloete said.
The Beach Volleyball competition followed the Indoor Volleyball competition, in which both male and female pairs from UWC (Liezle Petersen/Christin Delcarme and Leo Williams/Clinton Stemmet) took first place.
