UDUBS Volleyball wins

The UWC Volleyball Club made the University proud when both the men’s and women’s teams did well at the Flying Fish National Beach Volleyball Series which took place on campus over the weekend, from Friday, 30 January to Sunday, 1 February 2015.

The pair of Leo Williams and Grant Goldschmidt – currently ranked number one in South Africa –  in the men’s team won first place, while the duo of Bejancka Della and Liezle Peterson in the women’s team finished in a respectable fourth position. The victory for the men’s team sees them maintain their top position on the log in the series, and they are well on their way to the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

Elmien Cloete, UWC sports administrator responsible for beach volleyball, is delighted with the outcome.

“We are indeed very happy with the results. Our men’s team have loads of experience between them, with Goldschmidt having participated at the London 2012 Olympic Games. The only problem is that they need funding to enable them to participate in the European tournaments to play against top oppositions globally.”

Cloete is also satisfied with the ladies results. “Our girls also lived up to our expectations. They are very young and came up against players with more than 20 years of experience on the beach. In fact, the pairing they lost to in the semi-finals is from the Czech Republic and is ranked fifth in the world.”

The next Flying Fish National Beach Volleyball Series is expected to take place in Camps Bay - the date still needs to be confirmed.

This year the UWC Volleyball Club is looking forward to defending their Varsity Beach Volleyball title, which was won by both the men’s and women’s teams last year. The event is scheduled to take place on UWC soil from 22 to 24 April 2015.
