Local entrepreneurs around Cape Town benefited in July this year from the Entrepreneurship and Empowerment in South Africa (EESA) programme hosted by UWC and its partners - University of Florida, Oklahoma State University, the University of Colorado, and Texas A&M University.

Programme director, Dr Mike Morris, said the EESA programme is a life changing experience where students help historically disadvantaged entrepreneurs in and around Cape Town.

He explained that the programme was open to upper-level undergraduates and graduates regardless of their major.

“It is important for the participants to have a strong work ethic, creative problem-solving ability and the desire to make a difference with their skills,” Dr Morris said.

UWC and American students worked in teams to assist small businesses over a six week period to help make them more efficient and sustainable. The ventures range from food ventures to IT businesses to community newspapers, among others.

UWC student, Elaine Kaniaru (Honours in Investment and Finance), who hails from  Kenya, said this programme was a good learning opportunity. “There were times when I wanted to give up - but I am glad I didn't, as I am stronger because of it,” she said.

Elaine’s fellow group member, Esteban Aruro from the University of Florida, echoed her sentiments. “It is important to work hard, as your work determines the success of the companies, This programme is truly one of a kind and I would recommend it to anyone looking to learn.”
