UWC hosts 3rd Annual Youth Indaba

A collaboration between the City of Cape Town’s Department of Social Development (Youth Development and Early Childhood Development Directorate) and the University of the Western Cape’s (UWC) HIV & AIDS Programme will see the partners host and facilitate their 4th Annual Youth Indaba on Saturday, 20 June 2015 at UWC.

More than 600 youth from selected areas in the Western Cape were invited to participate. The Youth Indaba has as its broader objective reducing high risk behaviour amongst youth in these areas. The children from these communities were part of the Life Skills Healthy Living Photo-Voice Project, facilitated by UWC’s peer educators under the supervision of the City of Cape Town and UWC staff.

The Indaba is therefore a natural progression from observation and research into community issues (Photo-Voice Project) to unpacking the issues, as youth themselves search for solutions to address the many challenges facing them.

The event will provide a voice to youth as far as community issues are concerned and them becoming agents of change in their respective communities.

Speakers include the Deputy Mayor of Cape Town, Mr Ian Neilson, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic at UWC, Prof. Vivienne Lawack, representatives from the City of Cape Town, director of the HIV & AIDS Programme at UWC and the Junior Mayor of the City of Cape Town Junior City Council, and a motivational speaker.

International singing sensation Jimmy Nevis will keep the kids well entertained throughout the day, and local Radio DJ Carl Wastie will be broadcasting live from the event on the day.
