UWC hosts another successful race

One thing was clear at this year’s annual Fast and Flat 10km road race: The University of the Western Cape (UWC) is good at both organising and participating in world class athletic events.

Despite the chilly and rainy conditions, the event on 30 May 2015 was well-organised and attracted athletes in big numbers to contest the 10km road race, and enjoy the 10km run and 6km fun/walk in what has become one of the popular races on the South African athletic calendar. This is in spite of the fact that it takes place a day before the Comrades Marathon.

On the road, many participants, some as young as babies in prams and others over 80 years old, took part for the fun of it, as has been the case since the inception of the race in 1986. Others, however, meant business and UWC’s own Anthony Timoteus lifted the University flag high when he finished third behind winner Siboniso Soldaka of neighbouring Cape Peninsula University of Technology and Sibusiso Madikizela of Itheko, who finished in 30 minutes and four seconds and 30 minutes and eight seconds, respectively.

The 20-year-old Temoteus crossed the line at 30 minutes and 12 seconds, just two seconds shy of last year’s winner. In the ladies category, Zintle Xiniwe of Temp came first, followed by Annie Bothma and Bulelwa Simae, both of Nedbank Western Province.

Mandla Gagayi, Director of Sport Administration, thanked athletes for participating and said the event is another way of contributing to the development of the community through the power of sport.
