UWC’s Rugby boys place in top three in international tournament

Congratulations are in order to UWC’s Rugby 7s team who have returned home last month after competing in an international Centrale 7s tournament in France. The team made us proud as they placed third, competing against some of the top university teams in Europe.

Clement Trout, the coach for UWC 7s Rugby, said the boys learned to appreciate the importance of teamwork and friendship, being so far away from home. Trout stated, “The language barrier was a challenge, helping each other when they needed something, the boys supported each other so much. Respecting different cultures and personalities within our own team, we did the same towards the opponents and the different nationalities we engaged with. So I feel as a group we grew stronger, and as individuals we are mentally much stronger as well.”

While placing in the top three represented the team's greatest highlight, their trip to the Eiffel tower stands out as an unforgettable experience.

The team have 3 tournaments to compete in this year. They will face off in WP 7's club championship and Rockets Super 7's as the defending champions, and in USSA 7's week. The team's goals are to defend their titles, and to add another one at USSA week. According to Trout “The plan is to establish UWC 7's as a powerhouse in 7's rugby and also to serve as a feeder to the WP 7's team, in which 4 UWC players are currently playing, as well as the Springbok 7's. With the 7's as an official Olympic sport, we want to have players from UWC representing the University at the Olympics.”

The team would like to thank the director of Sports Mr Mandla Gagayi and his sports Admin Team Adrian Heyns and Hayward Barends who helped make the trip possible.

The team have big plans for 2016 that they are keeping under wraps, so you will have to watch this space to find out.
