Varsity Football 2014: Football fever hits UWC

The wild wintry weather brought extremely chilly conditions in Cape Town on Thursday 17 July 2014, but the atmosphere in the UWC Student Centre was hot as the University’s football club took  centre stage.

Presenting the squad that will take to the field when UWC kicks off its Varsity Football campaign against the University of Johannesburg on Monday, the team sang and danced – to huge applause from the crowd.

And if the atmosphere is anything to base the team’s prospect in the competition on, then the team has a good chance to improve on last year’s performance.

The team is better-prepared and different to the side that finished 6th in the eight-team competition. They have acquired the services of former national coach in Aboobaker “Boebie” Williams, and have a mix of experienced and rising stars.

Vice-captain Mxolisi Nxumalo says he is confident that the team will fly the University flag high in the completion.

“We’ve trained very hard to prepare for this tournament, the vibe is good and the team’s confidence is high,” the third-year BSc student comments.

Nxumalo, who hails from Bushbuckridge in Mpumalanga, promised the team will give all in their power to reach at least the semi-finals, and called on the UWC community to come in numbers to support them.

“The game is not just about the people on the field – the 12th person (supporters) is always important to the team,” he told students at the presentation.

Meanwhile, supporters are encouraged to visit the Varsity Sports website (www.varsitysportsSA.com) to register for two free tickets, purchase day pass tickets for R10 or buy at the gates for R20. Schools of residences can also contact the university club manager for free group tickets.

The game starts at 6pm at the UWC Sports Stadium and will be televised live.
