IMPORTANT INFORMATION

GRADUATION - MARCH/APRIL 2020

Students who are eligible for graduation in March / April have been anxious about how UWC will respond to the current global crisis and its consequences. The following are responses to some frequently asked questions.

1.                   WHY THE NEED FOR AN ONLINE GRADUATION CONFERRAL CEREMONY

The vast majority of students who are eligible to graduate would have completed their qualifications in 2019. Having patiently waited for their graduation to take place in March/April as originally planned makes it more difficult to accept the possibility of a further postponement. Unfortunately there are certain things that are outside our control, such as the rapid spread of COVID-19 which has more than doubled in the last day. The safety of our students and staff is of primary concern. This together with the President’s ban on gatherings of more than 100 persons has left UWC with no choice but to postpone the graduation ceremonies to a time when life returns to normal.

However, not wanting to delay the receipt of certificates by our graduands, especially as employability is often dependent on graduating, UWC has decided to be innovative and use technology to confer qualifications on all those students who were eligible to graduate in March/April 2020.

According to the Institutional Statute the Chancellor confers degrees on students. This together with the complete list of graduands in the graduation booklets, as well as certificates all validate our students as graduates. Living in an age where fake certificates are easily produced and qualifications obtained through fake sources the legitimacy of our students’ qualifications has to be protected.

This is being planned to take place on 31 March 2020 and some of the details of the operation are discussed below. Finer details will be communicated as these are finalised.

2.                   WILL THERE BE A PHYSICAL GRADUATION CEREMONY LATER IN THE YEAR

YES – The University will hold a graduation ceremony at a later stage in the year for those who wish to and are able to attend. Graduates who had degrees conferred on 31 March – 7 April 2020, will receive an official invite to this ceremony once the date/s has been confirmed.

3.                   HOW WILL THE ONLINE GRADUATION WORK

Graduates will be able to access a recording of the conferral which will take place on 31 March 2020, via the University website from 10h00.

§     The Chancellor will constitute the conferral ceremony and confer degrees, diplomas and certificates in the University to all those that appear in the booklet presented to him.

§     Thereafter, the Acting Vice-chancellor will deliver an address.

§     At this point degrees, diplomas and certificates will have been officially conferred.

A copy of the graduation booklet will be available online via the University Website.

4.                   HOW WILL I OBTAIN MY CERTIFICATE

Graduates will need to complete an online form that will be made available from 28 March 2020 via the University’s Graduation webpage in order for certificates will be couriered to them. This process of couriering should be finalised by end May 2020 (this is dependent on courier shipment protocols)

As an added service, certificates and letters of completion will be emailed to all graduands by mid-April 2020.
