Welcome to RPL

What is Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is the formal acknowledgement of the knowledge, skills and capabilities that people possess as a result of prior experiential learning through work, study, or other life experiences. The practice of RPL refers to the principles and specialized processes through which the prior knowledge, competence and skills of a person are engaged, mediated and rigorously assessed for the purposes of alternative access and admission to undergraduate and postgraduate study, or for exemption from modules or courses that contribute to the award of a qualification. The assessment criteria for RPL are designed to accommodate the knowledge and skills gained in practices outside the university in terms of their value for the envisaged course of study (qualification). The principles and procedures for the assessment and recognition of prior learning at UWC are governed by the RPL Policy of 2001 as amended in March 2019, and by the rules and regulations set out in the General Calendar and, for specific programmes, in the Faculty Calendars.
