Orientation 2019

STUDENT ORIENTATION PROGRAMME

Introduction

The staff and students of our University collaborate during the Student Orientation Programme to facilitate the induction of new first-year, undergraduate students to the campus environment and university life, their registration and the development of supportive peer networks. In this way, we try to ensure that they settle in and get started with the least amount of anxiety.

Senior students, who play the role of peer facilitators (PFs), are carefully selected and trained, and responsible for groups of first-year students, divided according to faculty and programme.

Welcome of FULLTIME students

The Welcome by the Rector on Monday, 28 January 2019 in the Main Hall launches the Orientation Programme. Faculties are divided into separate sessions. Kindly arrive at least 60 minutes before your respective session. You cannot attend any other session. Session times are listed below:

09h00 Arts, Education and Dentistry only

11h00 Economic & Management Sciences & Natural Science only

13h00 Community & Health Sciences and Law only.

Each welcome session will be followed by:

• Faculty Welcome and start of Orientation for students.

• Presentation to Parents followed by a tour of the campus.

Orientation of fulltime students

Fulltime students will be allocated a Peer Facilitator (PF) who, in turn, will assist students for the week. The PFs will plan a daily programme for their group of students.

Why must FULLTIME students attend the Orientation Programme?

Orientation Week is compulsory for all fulltime students on ALL days.

Students are assisted with their registration and choice of subjects, and introduced to the campus services, facilities, opportunities (cultural, sport, recreational and political), faculty staff and other students doing a similar programme. Presentations and workshops on topics relevant to your academic programme, career, personal and social adjustment are also arranged.

Where can I find information about the Orientation Week?

Information about the Orientation Programme will be provided by your Peer Facilitator on the first day of Orientation.

What must I bring to Orientation?

Comfortable footwear, a hat (it’s hot, do not be a victim of sunburn), your iced water bottle, a pen and notebook, and lots of enthusiasm.
