 Social Responsibility Events

Mandela Day Activities

Each year, the office of Leadership and Social Responsibility participates in Mandela Day activities. In 2018, as part of the centenary celebration, LSR hosted two activities. The first was a two day refurbishing activity at Campus Kids. This activity included refurbishing of the outdoor play equipment as well as a story time celebrating Mandela’s life and legacy. This was developed and narrated to the kids at the Centre. Student volunteers also developed a mini career expo targeted at the 3-5 year olds to expose them to various career options in the realm of Science, Law, EMS and Health.

Cooking Demonstration with Karen Hart

The Cooking Demonstration event held on the 26 April 2018, was informed by the challenge of food security which affects students broadly. The main aim of the event was to bring in a professional cook who would show students how to make exciting and wholesome meals utilising the Rise against Hunger (RAH) food pack supplemented with basic ingredients that would be found in a residence dorm – making the most out of the little that they might have. Hence, the rationale for the event was to destigmatise food insecurity as well as the use of the food packs.

Rise Against Hunger (RAH) Food Packing Event

On the 19th of October 2018 the office of Leadership and Social Responsibility, alongside Rise Against Hunger and with the generous sponsorship from The Foschini Group, held a food packing event at the UWC student centre. The event set out to pack 15 000 meals in 2 hours, which it successfully did in just over an hour (thanks to the high number of volunteers). The meals will supplement already existing food programs that are offered on the UWC campus.  The event also looked at creating a platform to give back, destigmatize food insecurity and have a “for students by students” initiative.
