 Types of Accommodations


The Office for Students with Disabilities provides the necessary means for UWC students with disabilities to adjust and thrive in the UWC campus environment. 

We provide the following kinds of accommodations to our students: 

  • Conversion of academic material into a text accessible, disability compatible format. 

  • Test and exam concession including, extra-time for tests and exams, use of disability specific assistive devices, assistive computer software and accessible test and exam venues. 

  • Assistive devices such as the Amigo handheld electronic magnifier, the Booksense recorder/reader with text-to-speech software, the Merlin reader, a desktop screen magnifier, the Portable Loop System which can be setup in classrooms and other venues for hard of hearing students to assist them with having better audio through the loop system and their hearing aids.

  • Screen reading software such as JAWS Screen Reader for blind students and Claroread and Wynn software for students with learning impairments, also, Zoomtext which is magnification software for visually impaired students. 

  • Loan of mobility vehicle, wheelchairs and walking aids for mobility impaired students as well as chronically ill students who have great difficulty getting around campus.

  • Rest facility for students requiring a quiet place to rest due to illness, injury or prescribed chronic medication.

  • The Main Library computer hub for students with disabilities has the same assistive software programs as the computer lab housed at the disability office. 

  • Barrier free access coordination to ensure students has physical access to classrooms and other facilities. Reporting of barriers to the relevant departments to ensure barriers are cleared. 

  • Campus orientation for blind and severely visually impaired students to navigate campus.

​In addition we: 

  • provide confidential consultation on the specific needs of the disability and accommodations needed by the individual student.

  • provide information and assistance regarding best practice for faculty members and university staff working with students with disabilities.

  • collaborate with faculties, departments, Residential Services, Financial Aid office and others to best support students with disabilities. 

  • facilitate referrals to the Office for Academic Support, Therapeutic Services, and the Peer Mentoring Program.

  • Provide assistance with disability bursary applications and sourcing assistive devices, information and quotations from registered vendors.

  • provide temporary disability accommodations for students who suffer temporary injury or illness and require support, assistance or accommodations during their recovery. 

  • ​create awareness and provide input for best practice with regards to disability at UWC.
