 About Us

In mid-year 2016 the UWC STARS (Student Tutoring for Academic Retention & Success) programme was incepted to enhance tutor programmes and practices at the University of Western Cape. The aim of the tutor enhancement programme is to increase undergraduate student retention and success by providing an “engaging” tutoring programme that delivers quality tutoring in a collaborative and caring environment.

[Part of the mission of UWC’s Tutor Enhancement Programme is to ensure that an inclusive environment is created to encourage learning opportunities and student success. Through this process, tutors and tutorials play an important role in creating learning communities that can support student success and a sense of belonging at our institution.

The role of the tutor complements the work of lecturers through helping and supporting students in achieving their learning goals. Tutors are an important link that enhances the learning experience in faculties and departments through being active participants in the dialogue among students, lecturers and administration. In this regard, tutors need to be equipped with training skills that could advance their responsibilities of being effective tutors. It is essential and compulsory that every tutor be provided with the appropriate training so that they can be confident to serve their fellow students in the best manner possible and with the best teaching and learning strategies available.

Research has revealed that structured and carefully planned tutor training has a significantly positive influence on student retention and success.
