 About Us

The Writing Centre is an academic unit linked to the Directorate of Teaching and Learning. We provide advice and support to both staff  and students, and our services are free of charge.

The mandate of the Writing Centre is to provide a supportive academic environment in which undergraduate, RPL and diploma students can receive advice, guidance and constructive assistance with written tasks and assignments, or any other creative or personal writing. Students can also seek assistance with reading and oral tasks as well. Postgraduate students should approach the Postgraduate Enrolment and Throughput Programme (PET) for assistance.

Teaching staff can get support for specific courses or groups of students in terms of setting tasks and assignments and designing assessment rubrics; working with students’ drafts of assignments; advice on embedding reading and writing into course materials and assessment tasks; and workshops designed to build staff, tutor and student awareness about aspects of reading and writing development in relation to specific tasks and courses. The Writing Centre also offers training for tutors and lecturers on the writer-respondent approach of engaging with students in written and oral forms of feedback about their work.

The peer writing tutors who work at the Writing Centre are all MA and PhD students working in a range of disciplines. They are all well-trained in relevant methods, approaches and theoretical perspectives on academic writing and academic literacies more broadly and are good writers and readers themselves.

The tutors are available on weekdays from 9am until 4pm for face-to-face tutorials, either one-on-one or in small groups. We also offer online consultations, where drafts of written work can be e- mailed to a peer writing tutor who will offer advice and guidance on revisions.
