 Information for Staff

How we can work with academic staff

We can offer:

  • Advice on teaching methods related to conveying desirable writing, reading and critical engagement practices in the classroom, involving class visits and one-on-one or small group collaborative discussions

  • Advice on setting of tasks and questions, as well as designing assessment criteria and rubrics

  • Advice on marking feedback and methods, particularly where tutors are involved in marking assignments

  • Advice on tutor training, particularly related to feedback and assessment

  • Writing and reading skills workshops for both staff and students related to any matters of concern linked to engaging with writing, reading or critical thinking skills development.

Please note: workshops can be helpful for students, but as there is a limited time in which to engage with the students, and often large groups to engage with, these have a limited ability to make any marked difference in the way students approach tasks or respond in writing. The workshops are there to facilitate an awareness in students, and teachers, about how to approach and respond to various tasks, which must be followed up with further discussion and practice in class and in tutorials where possible in order to have a more noticeable and sustained impact.

Collaboration on specific tasks and assignments

We would also like to invite staff members to bring certain tasks or assignments set to the Writing Centre to discuss the requirements, content and assessment criteria with the coaches, and then refer students at all levels of writing ability working on that assignment to the Centre for assistance. We will provide feedback on which students have sought help, and will request that the staff member provide return feedback on whether or not the writing consultation made a visible impact on the students’ written responses to the question set.
