Computer Boffins win international competition​


Earlier this year we congratulated the UWC computer boffins for winning the African leg of the Center for High Performance Computing (CHPC) competition and wished them well for their training in Texas in the USA in preparation for the International Competition in Leipzig . We now report the good news that our student team won - for South Africa - the International student cluster competition.

In 3rd place was Tsinghua University, China, in 2nd place, the University of Science and Technology in China, and 1st place was Team SA from the CHPC in South Africa. The team includes Eugene de Beste, Warren Jacobus, Nicole Thomas and Saeed Natha from Team Youdubs (UWC). Access a picture of the complete team on

The UWC foursome was joined by Ellen Baphumelele Nxala (Fort Hare) and Pieter Malan (Stellenbosch) for the final stage of the competition. Click here to access the team being interviewed in the final stages of the competition:

Assisted by Peter van Heusden and the 2014 winning team, the 2015 team from progressed to the next round of the National CHPC competition. The 2015 team are all second year students (3 from Computer Science) and are mentored by a Computer Science Honours student, Joshua Moran.  The 2015 team is: Curtly Blows from Physics and Darren Van Roodt, Gadeeja Davids and  Vyacheslav Shevchenko from Computer Science.
