Extension of SKA / SARChI Chair in Cosmology

Extension of SKA / SARChI Chair in Cosmology

Prof Roy Maartens with two of the postgraduate students in his team

The NRF has extended the SKA/SARChI chair of Prof Roy Maartens for a further 5 years, following the review of the first 5 years. This will allow Prof Maartens to continue building his research team in SKA (Square Kilometre Array) cosmology within the Department of Physics & Astronomy. The SKA will be the world's biggest astronomy facility, and most of it will be built in South Africa. Teams such as those led by Prof Maartens are developing the next generation of South African scholars needed for our country to be able to produce world-class science from the SKA. Prof Maartens’ research group will be closely linked to the new Centre for Radio Cosmology in the Department (see next item).
