Kudos to our staff and students

Three undergraduate students on top honours in Standard Bank’s hotly contested IT Challenge, with an application offering voice-activated online banking to help visually impaired, illiterate and other South Africans. We salute Kyle Jordaan, Daniel Collins and Liam Doult - as well as their team coach, UWC computer science lecturer Reg Dodds - for producing an innovation that will make a difference in the lives of so many people.

Four female students - Yandisa Citwa, Noluthando Ntshaba, Janine Anthony and Sibabalwe Kweza – won the entry to the BCom Information Sciences Women Matter(s) Hackathon last month. These pioneers developed an online app, Sistahood Watch, to address safety and health challenges for their fellow female students. Sistahood Watch connects students with one another, gets them to walk in groups, and can alert campus security about any emergencies.

Prof Leslie Petrik has been named as the 2016 Science and Technology Businesswoman of the Year by the Businesswomen’s Association of South Africa, for her innovative work on managing waste with the water, power, mining and hydrocarbon processing industry. As head of the Environmental Nanoscience Group at UWC, Prof Petrik has published hundreds of papers, graduated dozens of students, and led research that has important consequences for the world we live in.
