MRC approves new Research Unit for the School of Public Health

Following a call for proposals and assessment using international experts, the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) has awarded the UWC School of Public Health’s extramural unit, the ‘SAMRC/UWC Health Services to Systems Research Unit’, with the potential for funding in excess of R 1 million for a year for 15 years.

According to Prof Helene Schneider, Director of the School of Public Health, who championed the UWC proposal, the “Health Services to Systems” will seek to generate evidence on health system strengthening that is  relevant to the current health system reforms in South Africa, whilst contributing to international knowledge and debates. The unit will focus on interventions and technologies to improve the access, quality and equity of health services become integrated into the routine institutional environment and achieve sustainable coverage and impacts at scale.

The need to open the “black box” of implementation and health system strengthening is now recognized internationally. Conceptual and methodological innovations, especially from the field of complexity and systems science, have created significant new opportunities for examining these phenomena. The programme is located  within this relatively new field and will form part of an increasingly recognized Western Cape based hub of health systems research that is contributing to debates in Africa and internationally on how best to do health systems research.
