 Prof Alan Christoffels puts UWC on the world stage


On January 26, 2015 Prof Alan Christoffels, Director of the South African National Bioinformatics Institute, received exciting news that he was the recipient of the first Hugo African Prize 2015.

The Human Genome Organisation (HUGO) International, the HUGO-African Prize Awardees are selected by a panel of 6 international council members and they are:

Professor and Chairman, University of Geneva Medical School, Department of Genetic Medicine and Development, Geneva, Switzerland.

Edison LIU
President​ and CEO, The Jackson Laboratory, USA.

Charles ROTIMI
Director, Center for Research on Genomics and Global Health, National Human Genome Research Institute, USA.

Professor and Associate Dean Research, James Cook University, Australia.

Professor and Vice Dean, Sackler Faculty of Medicine, Tel Aviv University, Israel.

Director, National Institute of Biomedical Genomics, India.

The Award Reviewing Committee was unanimous in their decision about awarding the prize to Prof Christoffels.

The HUGO-African Prize consists of a US$5,000 monetary award and a plaque which was presented at the award presentation ceremony at the annual Human Genome Organisation (HUGO) – Human Genome Meeting 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 17thMarch 2015, where Prof Christoffels delivered a keynote address.

The award is in recognition of Prof Christoffels’ contribution to bioinformatics and human health on an international level.
