Prof Antjie Krog continues to excel

Prof Antjie Krog continues to excel!

Prof Antjie Krog’s most recently published book, Conditional Tense- Memory and Vocabulary after the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission book focuses on  South Africa entered democracy in 1994, a radiant optimism suggested a bright future for the new, unified country. But today the cumulative effect of the country's corrosive past - 300 years of colonialism; the Anglo-Boer War; the displacement, dispossession and disenfranchisement of millions of people; and the ravages of racism and capitalist exploitation - continues to eat away at what Archbishop Desmond Tutu has admiringly called 'the Rainbow Nation'.

Using the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission as starting point, Krog's essays explore texts from many corners of South Africa in an attempt to re-map the borders of our communities. Texts from black women, Afrikaner men and comic strips are discussed alongside ideas of African philosophers, theologians and  Nobel Prize-winning writers. By marrying academic observation and poetic intervention, the text endeavours to move beyond the present moment and towards a vocabulary of grace and care.

The book was published by Seagull Books as part of "The Africa List".
