Prof Marla Trindade (Tuffin) wins 2015 Woman in Science Award

Prof. Marla Trindade (Tuffin) the DST/NRF SARChI, Research Chair in Microbial Genomics and the Director of IMBM: Institute for Microbial Biotechnology & Metagenomics, won the 2015 Woman in Science Award. For the category Distinguished Young Woman Scientist.

According to Prof Tuffin, ‘I was so excited that I couldn’t help myself asking Minister Pandor if I could hug her, on stage’.

Prof Tuffin acknowledges that hard work and collaboration were integral to her winning the award. She states that ‘I know that I have worked very hard, sacrificing much to have achieved all that I have, but it has not been all my doing. It is an honour to be awarded this recognition, which I receive on behalf of the many students, researchers and staff who have contributed to the outstanding research being recognized. I feel so privileged to have been supported and encouraged to pursue my passion, and to be given the freedom to build on my strengths. I hope my story encourages other women to realise that they are valuable in science and they can make a worthy contribution to building a sustainable future’.
