Soldier stationed in Darfur graduates with MPhil in Law

Mfundo Nkosi’s thesis was based on the law of war, and was titled, ‘Inconsistency in the implementation of the responsibility to protect during humanitarian crises: The case of Libya and Sudan’. Mfundo is a member of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF). In the middle of his research he was deployed to Sudan as part the SANDF troops to ensure security in the troubled Darfur area of Sudan. Mfundo served as part of the 15 000-strong UNAMID (African Union / United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur). He had limited access to the internet, and in the midst of trying conditions with a war going on daily, he managed to stay in contact with his supervisor and finalised his thesis after receiving comments from external examiners. His determination to finish the MPhil despite the challenges of his job in the volatile, arid, and extremely hot Darfur terrain must be commended.
