On Tuesday 13 May 2014, the Institute for Post-School Studies hosted a seminar on the White Paper for Post-School Education and Training (2013). The seminar at UWC was well attended by about 90 representatives from an array of stakeholders in post-schooling in the Western Cape, including from our three neighbouring universities, six FET colleges, private providers, sector experts, NGOs and the Provincial Government Department. A number of UWC staff members were in attendance, and members of the Qualifications Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) in Pretoria travelled to Cape Town to be at the event. The DVC: Academic, Prof Bharuthram,  welcomed delegates to the seminar, and Prof Joy Papier, Director of the IPSS provided an overview of the White Paper (see link to her slide presentation). Respondents from each of the main sectors dealt with in the White Paper commented on the envisaged impact of the White Paper proposals and potential hindrances to implementation. Ms Nasim a Badsha (CEO: CHEC) spoke to issues impacting on universities; Mr Farrell Hunter (Country Director: DVVInternational) gave insight into adult education matters; Mr Cassie Kruger (Principal: False Bay College) provided a TVET perspective; and Ms Bronwin Abrahams (MERSETA and chair of the SETA Council in the Western Cape) addressed aspects of the White Paper already being implemented by SETAs. Participants responded enthusiastically in the lively plenary discussion which followed. Prof Zubeida Desai (Dean: Education) who concluded with a vote of thanks, concurred with Prof Bharuthram that the seminar provided a necessary forum for debate across traditional education and training silos, and should become a regular event on the UWC calendar for initiating discussion on topical matters in post-schooling.
