Prof Nicky Roman presents at round table discussion on the state of the family in South Africa

A round table discussion on the state of the family in South African was hosted by the Catholic Parliamentary Liaison Office (CPLO), in collaboration with the National Institute for Crime Prevention and Re‐integration of Offenders (NICRO) and the Department of Social Development, on the 28th of February 2014.

In 2013, Cabinet approved a White Paper on the Family, and 2014 is the 20th anniversary of the International Year of the Family. In this context, a round table discussion was conducted to examine the state of the South African family.

The presentations highlighted that the family is considered to be cornerstone of society. Currently,  family life was challenged in a myriad of ways, which include challenges related to, absent fathers, substance abuse, school drop outs, family violence and teenage pregnancy. The essence of the round table discussion was that partnerships between families, government and communities should be created which would enable ‘whole family approach’ to strengthening and supporting families towards experiencing a sense of wellness. This sense of wellness would contribute to the creation of family environments in which children feel safe, are protected and cared for.

One of the outcomes of these deliberations was that a family forum would continue discussions and engage in the implementation of the emerging family policy, which is now in its White Paper stage. Universities have a critical role to play in these partnerships through contributing to the creation of new knowledge and the dissemination of research findings to inform evidence based practice.

According to Prof Roman, ‘This was a very fruitful discussion and definitely a platform where UWC can play a major role in policy implementation for the purpose of family well-being and ultimately societal transformation’
