Stellar performance rendered by the South African-German Centre for Transnational Criminal Justice Class of 2013

A stellar performance is the only appropriate epithet to describe the achievement of the LLM Class of 2013. There was a 100% pass rate in the rigorous LLM programme within a single academic year; no member of the class obtained an overall mark of less than 65%; and 6 of the 12 members of the class graduate cum laude. The Centre is generously funded by the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) to which we owe an enormous debt of gratitude. It is one of 5 DAAD Centres of Excellence in Africa and its LLM programme was in its 5th year in 2013. The hard work and dedication of UWC Extraordinary Professor Gerhard Werle, Professors Lovell Fernandez and Raymond Koen (Deputy Deans of the Law Faculty), Dr Moritz Vormbaum of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin are pivotal in the ever improving performance of the LLM programme. The programme attracts top quality students from across the African Continent, who draw inspiration from their participation in an annual Summer School in Berlin, where they are exposed to an array of speakers from the cream of academe, international criminal justice practitioners and Judges of the International Criminal Court. The pillars of the programme’s success are DAAD’s generous support (which has been extended until 2018), careful selection, rigorous intensive teaching, a healthy mix of competition and co-operation among the students and UWC Law Faculty’s supportive environment which sees it justifiably claiming the title “Cradle of Africa’s Legal Talent”, which the Dean, Professor Martin believes defines the distinctive character of UWC’s Law Faculty.

Since the inception of the programme in 2009, over 100 students have obtained LLM degrees. Most graduates have assumed prominent positions in the criminal justice systems of their respective countries, while others work for international organisations such as the United Nations, Interpol and Transparency International. The program, which has received DAAD funding for another 5 years, has produced 3 graduates who are lecturers in the Law Faculty and 3 others have been awarded doctorates.
