On an annual basis, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) conducts a student education program worldwide. This program is entitled “AAPG Imperial Barrel Award"(IBA). It is a global competition in which universities first participate in a regional competition and if successful in that round, they qualify for the final competition at the AAPG’s national convention in the USA.

The criterion for the competition stipulates that the competing teams are to be composed of up to five full time students and a staff advisor. The students receive a competition package from AAPG, which usually consists of an exploration database. Participants are then required to analyse the geological and geophysical content of the database and present their findings.

The UWC team won the 2014 Imperial Barrel Award, Africa region, which was organized by the AAPG in Lagos, Nigeria. UWC was represented by four MSc students; Ms Leilah Gharbaharan, Ms Ondela, Mr Marvel Makhubele and Mr Mclean Christopher Robert. Their staff advisor was Dr. Mimonitu Opuwari .

The UWC team thus qualified to participate in the global competition and attend the AAPG National Convention 2014 to be held in Houston, Texas from the 2nd April to 10th April 2014.
