Erasmus Mundus Action 2 programme is designed to foster institutional co-operation in the field of higher education between the European Union (EU) and Third world Countries through a mobility scheme providing for student and academic exchanges for the purpose of studying, teaching, training and research. This EU-South African Programme also promotes cultural and social exchanges between different nationalities. It is ultimately directed at enhancing the quality of higher education,  socio-economic development of non-EU countries targeted by the EU external cooperation policy, by promoting dialogue between the involved parties.

The current mobility scheme involves four consortia facilitating student and staff exchange between EU countries and South Africa. The consortia are:  AESOP: A European and South African Partnership on Heritage and Past (www.aesop-em.org), EUSAID:(http://www.eusa-id.eu/), EUROSA: Europe- South-Africa Partnership for Human Development
(
http://www.ua.ac.be/main.aspx?c=.EUROSA) and EU-SATURN: European-South African programme in Tuning for Regional Needs in higher education (http://www.eu-saturn.eu/).

A total of 129 postgraduate students and staff members from universities across South Africa were selected for the programme for the 2013/2014 academic year; 64 masters students, 38 doctoral candidates and 27 staff members. Of these, 21 grantees are based at UWC. Over the past three years, more than 18 UWC staff members and students have benefited from Erasmus Mundus grants.

At a pre-departure function at CPUT at the end of July, it was confirmed that for the 2014/2015 academic year, 147 grantees were selected across South Africa and across all four consortia, 18 student and staff exchanges have been confirmed for UWC, the largest number of awardees from a single South African institution for Erasmus Mundus Action 2

The call for the next round of grants be made between September and November 2014 and closes around mid- March 2015. This call will be advertised on the UWC Webpage and UWC Communications email.
