Zola Mcaciso, Abe Bailey Fellow for the 2014 academic year

Zola Mcaciso, is a final year Law student at UWC. He is an Allan Gray Candidate Fellow and an alumnus of the South Africa Washington International Program (SAWIP). The Abe Bailey Trustees selected him for his exceptional leadership qualities and community service.  His personal philosophy is to aspire to be at the forefront with other African leaders who strive to promote human rights and ensure equal treatment under the law. Mcaciso finds himself in good company! Over 800 South Africans have received this prestigious,  all-expenses paid, travel grant since 1951.

His passion lies in education, and he firmly believes that education is a vehicle for making a positive difference in our societies. According to Mcaciso, “Being a first generation university student in the family, on the verge of bringing home the family’s first academic degree, I have personally experienced the life-changing value of education. I just want the same thing for many ambitious and willing young South Africans.”  He co-founded Y-L.A.C.K (Young Leaders and Conjures of Knowledge), which is a youth program in his  community dedicated to ensuring that high school students receive the proper guidance necessary to ensure success at school that will guarantee a place at University.

Mcaciso is grateful for the opportunity afforded to him by the Abe Bailey Travel award.  He says, “A lot has been sacrificed in the past in our country to ensure that we have access to opportunities like these. It is therefore my responsibility as a youth member and beneficiary such opportunities to ensure that such opportunities are used the betterment of our country and the lives of our people. This opportunity therefore places an inescapable obligation on me to be a catalyst for change and a source of strength and inspiration for the youth of our generation”. He leaves South Africa for the UK on 26 November to tour universities in London, including Cambridge and Edinburgh.
