While the competition was stiff on the field during the Varsity Cup rugby match between FNB UWC and FNB Tuks, there were a couple of other competitions off the field that added to the entertainment and excitement.
Supporters, once again, filled the stadium to support Udubs. There were dance-offs and supporters were pitted against each other during the Steers Build-a-Burger competition.
Another competition included the ongoing Miss UWC Varsity Cup, which has pitted 12 young students for the title. But the competition has taken a different route than the normal beauty pageant, and is aimed at choosing a suitable candidate who will be an ambassador for UWC.
“In this competition the contestants will be judged on community involvement, marketing, game activations and overall knowledge of UWC rugby. The contestants are encouraged to come up with innovative and creative ideas to market themselves and the Varsity Cup on campus,” explains coordinator Nadia Mgulwa.
Contestants watch the matches from the sidelines of the field and are seated on a distinct pink couch. The winner will represent the University at the Miss Varsity Cup final which will take place during the competition’s final match.
While the home team put up a brave fight, the boys from the University of Pretoria won the match with a score of 70 to 12. Tristan Leyds, from FNB UWC, scored a seven-point try in the second half and Keagan Fortune made the conversion, in addition to scoring a penalty early in the game.
