Launch of New Contrast Magazine
The New Contrast Magazine relaunch took place on 6 April 2016. Impressively the very first Contrast was published in 1960, making this one of the longest running magazines in South Africa and certainly the country's longest running literary magazine. With UWC’s very own English and creative writing lecturer Meg Vandermerwe at the helm as one of the current editors for the magazine, it has been given a new and exciting facelift.
At the event some prominent and up and coming writers and poets read their works featured in the magazine to the audience who had gathered at The Book Lounge on Roeland Street in the CBD. Among those present at the event were many UWC alumni and staff. Featured in the magazine are notable writers like Zakes Mda, Anjtie Krog and Sindiwe Magona. Sindiwe was present at the event to read her work published in the magazine. She was accompanied by the new isiXhosa Editor for the magazine and creative writing Masters student at UWC Madoda Gcwadi, who read her work in isiXhosa.
Also published in the magazine and present to do readings was UWC creative writing doctorate student Jolyn Phillips is an Education Masters Student and UWC creative writing Masters graduate Hilda Wilson. Dr Vandermerwe said that it was not intentional for there to be as many UWC alumni and staff. However, it can be seen as a testament to the level of talent we have among our students and staff.
For those aspiring young writers, the magazine also features manifestos from some prominent writers who give their view of what they believe a good writer and good writing is. The magazine has a quarterly release and those who subscribe will have the magazine delivered to their doorstep. For students there is a reduced subscription rate of R175 for the four issues for the year, this is an amazing offer, not just for writers but for all students to be inspired by this country's talent.
Aspiring writers are encouraged to send their work to the magazine for consideration as featured articles. It would be advantageous for those interested in submitting their work to take a look at this year's first edition to see which sort of short stories and poems are accepted as a means of improving their chances of being published.
For students who wish to subscribe go to firstname.lastname@example.org and don't forget to send a picture of your student card
