The bold and the beautiful Siba: The Next Miss Varsity Shield?
University of the Western Cape (UWC) students, staff, alumni and friends have many reasons to vote for Sibabalwe Mayekiso as she vies for this year’s Miss Varsity Shield beauty pageant crown.
The 21-year-old second-year BCom Accounting student is a big dreamer who’s very passionate about life, and she wants advance the University brand - and most importantly to be a role model for the youth.
“I’m very passionate about modelling and pageantry, and I also believe in beauty with purpose,” she explains.“So entering Miss Varsity Shield is killing two birds with one stone.”
“My goal is to go as far as Miss South Africa,” she adds, “and win it. Being a person who’s been through hard times in life, as Miss South Africa it would be easy for me to reach out to people who are down and who have no self-confidence - to tell them I have been through this and that and that there is hope for them. As a young woman who believes in God and wisdom, I think I would make a good role model for the youth. I hope to reach to the poor, to people who are poor in spirit - and to actually empower them somehow.”
With UWC having won the contest only once since it was established in 2010, Mayekiso believes it’s time to bring the crown back where it belongs.
“I believe I will be a great ambassador for the Varsity Shield brand and in that I will bring a good name for UWC and bring the university a boost to an already excellent reputation.”
The competition is hosted annually, pitting the universities that are participating in the Varsity Shield rugby competition against each other in a different arena.
Having outclassed six other worthy contestants to be crowned as Miss UWC Varsity Shield, Mayekiso is now facing an even stiffer challenge from winners from the universities of Fort Hare, Walter Sisulu, KwaZulu-Natal, Rhodes, as well as Cape Peninsula and Tshwane universities of technology.
“I don’t know what to expect [during the contest],” Mayekiso says, “but I’m confident.”
The competition will take place during the final of the Varsity Shield rugby competition, when our own UWC Rugby Club takes on Fort Hare at UWC Sports Stadium on Monday 10 April 2017.
