Rector inspires soccer team
University of the Western Cape (UWC) Rector and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Brian O’Connell, has challenged the University’s Football Club to “double” their efforts when they compete in the inaugural Varsity Football Challenge.
Prof O’Connell said that the UWC team may not have as many resources available at their disposal as the rest of the opponents participating within this competition, but he believes that the team has the potential to achieve great things regardless.
“When you get onto those fields, I expect you to work twice as hard as your opponents,” Prof O’Connell told the 25-member squad when he wished them good luck ahead of their opening game against the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University on 22 July 2013. “I expect you to be twice as determined, to be twice as courageous and to be twice as committed as they are.”
The Varsity Football Challenge, sanctioned by the South African Football Association and University Sport South Africa (USSA), is the latest addition to the popular Varsity Sports initiative, organised by the University Sports Company (a conglomerate of South African universities) and its exclusive service provider, Advent Sport Entertainment and Marketing.
It follows the success of the Varsity Athletics and Varsity Hockey events which took place earlier this year, and that of Varsity 7’s Rugby and Varsity Beach Volleyball, which were launched in 2012.
The new soccer competition will pit UWC against the seven other best male university teams within the country in a format designed to boost the sport at tertiary level and provide a breeding ground for exciting new soccer talent.
