Students, staff and academics at the University of the Western Cape (UWC) stepped away from their daily routines from 1pm to 1.30pm on Wednesday, 1 August 2018, in support and solidarity with #TheTotalShutdown campaign.
The campaign saw marches in cities across South Africa in protest against femicide, rape and gender-based violence and discrimination. At UWC, the campus community responded strongly to the call to action to wear black and red. This is what they had to say about the campaign:
