The University of the Western Cape extends sincere condolences to the family and friends of Thobela Rintsana, who was found deceased yesterday morning at 7:45 by University cleaning staff and security. We are deeply saddened by the passing of this student, who was completing his first-year in BSc Geology at the Faculty of Science.
The body was found in an open area on campus premises, and the cause of death is as yet unknown. At this stage there is no sign of foul play, but further information will be released once the forensic examination has been completed. An Inquest docket has been opened at Bellville South SAPS.
Thobela Rintsana was 19 years old. The death of such a young and vibrant student is a shock to the entire campus community.
The affected family and students who are in mourning are being provided with counselling services to assist them in dealing with this tragic event.
The University is making arrangements for a memorial service which will be announced in due course.
We appeal to members of the public to refrain from spreading incorrect rumours and misinformation via social media and various other platforms. We request that everyone keep the Rintsana family in their thoughts and prayers, and that the privacy of the Rintsana family is respected during their time of bereavement.
