UWC’s stature as a winning sporting university was reaffirmed when its athletes shined in the University Sport South Africa (USSA) games that took place around the country during the past week.
Among those who excelled is the Beach Volleyball Club whose women’s team successfully defended their USSA Beach Volleyball trophy. The duo of Kayla Provins and Bejancka Della made sure that the trophy stays where it belongs, as sports administrator Elmien Cloete put it, winning all their matches without dropping a set. The victory qualified the team for the Varsity Beach Volleyball tournament scheduled to take place in Cape Town next April. The men’s team didn’t participate this year.
The football club did not disappoint either with both the women’s and men’s teams finishing third and securing their places in next year’s Varsity Football competition – the only teams to do so from the Western Cape.
In addition, the brilliant performance of individual players did not go unnoticed. Sensational attacking midfielder Tapelo Sixishe was the top goal scorer in the men’s category, while Banyana Banyana star Leandra Smeda also topped the women’s chart.
Attacking midfielder Koketso Nelly Mamabolo was chosen as the Female Player of the Tournament, and nine UWC players - two males and seven women - were selected for the USSA national team.
