UWC thump WITS in first Varsity Football Game In Bellville
The University of the Western Cape (UWC)’s men’s football team started their Varsity Football tournament in extraordinary fashion when they beat Wits University 6-0 - the biggest victory in the competition to date - at UWC Sports Stadium on Thursday evening.
The win shot the Bellville-based side to the top of the log standings and emphasized their intentions to reclaim the title they won in 2015.
The game started off slowly, with both teams applying pressure in the early stages. UWC took the lead through a penalty that was converted by midfielder Ryan Steer. On the brink of half-time, Chad Smith, who earned the Samsung Best Shot award for his sterling performance, scored to extend the scoreline to 2-0 by exploiting a gap in the Wits’ defence.
UWC started the second half with even more vigour, with Smith grabbing his second goal for the night after receiving a great through-ball from substitute Aghmat Ceres.
In the closing stages of the game UWC scored three quick goals - two by striker Phiwokuhle Mphalala and one by captain Thulani Mkosi - to end the game with a 6-0 drubbing.
UWC’s next fixture is away at the Central University of Technology in Bloemfontein on Thursday, 3 August 2017 - before they come back home to welcome North West University to the Operating Room (as UWC Sports Stadium is affectionately called).
Come watch the boys operate - and witness some of the finest football action around!
