 About Us

 Who are we?

  • UWC Hiking Club was established in 1995. In 2014 the club was assessed and restructured and adopted a new approach. The Hiking Club is now also known as Bush Hiking Club. The name derives from UWC’s historical and political background as well as the institutional establishment 53 years ago. There is a correlation between UWC that was previously referred to as BUSH College or Bush University and Bush Hiking Club.

  •  To grow the membership of the club and to get the full recognition it deserves.

  •  To stimulate and balance, creating a nexus between nature and studies.

  •  promote hiking as a healthy, and safe form of outdoor recreation, for individuals.

  •  serve as a forum for the exchange of information and ideas relevant to safe hiking.

  •  provide Members with advice and up to date information regarding hiking routes, equipment and accessories.

  •  provide a hiking calendar with social events as well as day and weekend hikes that will cater for the broad cross-section of  Members.

  •  provide alternative events should advertised events be cancelled?

 Commitment To

  • The Hiking Club of the University of the Western Cape, taking you to beautiful and wondrous locations all over the globe whether it  is local or international hikes.

 Hiking & New Members

  • As a club we attempt to go on hikes on a bi-monthly basis. These day hikes will also serve as an assess instrument for new hikers to establish their fitness levels. This will give the management of the club an idea of whether new hikers will be able to manage weekend hikes. These hikes are more challenging than the day hikes and vary from moderate to difficult, but at the same time they are fun. This is a great team building concept.

  • Hikers are expected to bring and supply their own equipment, cover all related fees hiking (such as food, and permit fees). A  membership fee of R100 is payable for students and R150 for staff or alumni members to join the club.  It is advised that you get  yourself Wild Card at Cape Nature Reserve which will be a once off payment that covers most hiking permits. Fund raising events  are organized to assist financially challenge hikers.
