Department of Medical Biosciences Undergraduate

Entry into the Medical Biosciences programme is dependent on your Grade 12 scores (click here for further information). On the basis of your matric results and/or on an invitation to write an entrance test, you may be selected for either the three- or four-year BSc Medical Biosciences Programme.

Your first year - this year provides you with a firm foundation in the sciences. You will register for modules in life science (biological basics), chemistry, computer literacy, statistics, as well as anatomy and physiology. The anatomy and physiology curriculum have been merged to provide the learner with a module which seamlessly integrates the study of physiological function and anatomical structure. These modules are called MBS111 and MBS121 and form part of your core curriculum.
Your second and third years - in second year onwards you will be exposed to medical bioscience modules in physiology, anatomy, medical microbiology and biotechnology. Of these, the biotechnology modules are electives, and you may choose which suit your future interest best. The biotechnology modules are offered by the Department of Biotechnology.
Included core MBS module topics: the anatomy of the human body, metabolism and the functions of various proteins in cells, cardiovascular physiology, respiratory physiology, cancer biology, reproduction physiology, biological control mechanisms, developmental biology, temperature regulation, special senses function, nutrition and physiological effects of exercise.

Your first and second years - these first two years allow you to prepare for the rigors of studying medical bioscience by providing you with a firm foundation in the sciences. In your first year you will register for modules in life science I (biological basics), chemistry and mathematics.
