Maarman has vast teaching experience as school teacher and academic in the areas of Comparative Education, Education Systems, History of Education, Methods of Social Sciences, Methods of History, Curriculum Studies and Research modules. His research specialization is the exploration of the interface between poverty and schooling and had published widely focusing on the lived experiences of teachers and learners in the basic education sector. His work is inspired by Nobel Lauraete and economic philosophy theorist Amartya Sen. Maarman has supervised 10 doctoral studies in this area using the capability approach and contributing to a new body of knowledge in South Africa.
Bibliography
Rouaan Maarman qualified as a teacher at UWC by completing a BA degree in 1992 and his HDE (Postgraduate) in 1993. He started teaching in Somerset East in 1994 and completed his BEd (1999) and MEd (2001) degrees while teaching at his alma mater. His first academic appointment was at the North West University in 2003 where he completed his PhD in Comparative Education in 2005. Maarman joined UWC as a Senior Lecturer in 2008 and occupied various academic leadership positions as Programme Coordinator, Head of Department and Deputy Dean (Research & Postgraduate Studies.
Highlights
Maarman’s inaugural lecture (We can dream: Freedoms and lifeworthiness in basic education in democratic South Africa) as Professor, delivered in August 2025, attracted more than 900 views on youtube from a global audience. He served on various provincial and national committees and is one of the leading commentaries on basic education in South Africa. As a third-term Deputy Dean, Maarman has transformed his faculty’s research and postgraduate profiles to position it amongst the leading faculties of education in South Africa. This positioning has translated into the faculty being ranked as a tier 4 research faculty by the Times Higher Education global university rankings in 2023.
