Inaugural Enga Kameni Prize for deserving LL.M Students

The Faculty of Law is pleased to announce the winners of the inaugural Enga Kameni Prize to be given to some deserving students in the LL.M Programme in International Trade and Investment Law in Africa, in particular, the Legal Aspects of Trade Finance Module. The prizes, sponsored by the generous contributions from Dr Enga Kameni, are given to the best student in the module, the best female student in the module, and the most disciplined student during the module.

The benefactor, Dr Enga Kameni, is manager, legal services, at the African-Export Import Bank, a multilateral finance institution based in Cairo, Egypt. It should be noted that he was a member of the third intake (2004 cohort of students) of the LL.M Programme in International Trade Business and Investment Law at UWC. This prestigious postgraduate programme has been offered at UWC since 2003. The programme is offered to selected students from all over Africa, and the current intake represents 10 different countries. The programme is the result of a joint initiative by the Universities of the Western Cape and Pretoria, and the student intakes alternate between the two universities on an annual basis. Dr Kameni is the first of UWC alumni to teach in the programme, and has been doing so since 2006. He has bolstered this reputation by being the first of UWC alumni to give prizes to deserving students of the programme.

Speaking from Cairo, Egypt, Dr Kameni stated that the goal of the prizes is to reward deserving students for their hard work, thereby promoting and encouraging academic excellence. “All my postgraduate studies (Western Cape, Harvard Law School and Pretoria) were done on very generous scholarships from these institutions, without which I would not be where I am today. It just makes sense to give back, especially to deserving students”.

This year’s winners are:

Best Student: Puja Albert Chris (Nigeria)

Best Female Student: Chidochashe Nicolette Ncube (Zimbabwe)

Best Disciplined Student: Alfred Paul Juwah (Sierra Leone)

Congratulations to the inaugural winners of the Enga Kameni Prizes, and a heartfelt thank you to Dr Enga Kameni. You are testimony to the aims and objectives, and the success of this programme. We are proud to call you one of ours.
