Obituaries 2017
The University of the Western Cape mourns the recent passing of members of our alumni community, including:

Jodie Moment, who passed away on 8 November 2017, five days after her 28th birthday. Moment graduated from UWC with a BCom Accounting in 2011 and went on to work for Deloitte in South Africa, the United States, Puerto Rico and the United Kingdom.

Dr Alfred 'Bokkie' Norman, beloved and respected UWC psychology lecturer, passed away peacefully on 22 November 2017.
Dr Norman joined UWC’s Psychology Department as a statistics lecturer in 1976, where he was revered by students and staff alike for his gentle, patient and loyal disposition until he retired in March 1994. Former colleague at the Psychology Department, UWC Rector and Vice-Chancellor Professor Tyrone Pretorius recalls, “Some of the descriptions used when talking about Mr Bokkie are ‘soft, stalwart, constant, gentle, kind, patient, steadfast’. Prof Pretorius says these descriptions “speak to the life of a man who moved with quiet confidence and who drew those around him because they sensed his goodness.”

Dr Jimmy Ellis, a former staff member and student, passed away quietly on 23 November 2017, surrounded by his closest relatives, after a protracted series of battles with cancer.

Dr Ellis’s long connection with UWC began in 1964 when he started his undergraduate studies. After completing his degree in 1967, he began working at the University as the technical assistant in the Department of Anthropology and Sociology in the Faculty of Arts. In the 1970s he was appointed as a lecturer in that department, where he worked until 1999, when he moved to Rand Afrikaans University to assist its transformation into the University of Johannesburg. Dr Ellis retired in 2012 and returned to the Western Cape to be close to his family and friends.

On behalf of the University community, we extend our heartfelt and deepest condolences to the families of the deceased during their time of grief.
