Representatives from the University of the Western Cape’s Science and International Relations Departments recently met with two vaccine manufacturing companies to share their work and discuss a possible future collaboration.
Representatives from the Chinese vaccine manufacturing company, Sinovac, and its local partner, Numolux, showed keenness in collaborating with UWC at its new vaccine manufacturing plant in Saldanha.
The Numolux Group will be handling phase one of the project which will include handling bottling and labelling of the locally-produced vaccines.
Hilton Klein (pictured), Chief Executive Officer at Numolux Group Pty Ltd, said he was pleased to meet with an esteemed institution such as the University of the Western Cape. As an alumnus, he told university representatives he is optimistic about building a relationship with UWC.
Each company had an opportunity to introduce itself. Sinovac and UWC’s Biotechnology department and School of Pharmacy established several overlapping areas of research between themselves and Sinovac.
Mr Umesh Bawa, UWC’s Director of International Relations said the university is keen to explore how UWC and our Chinese partner can benefit from the collaboration, with the premise that it is in the interests of all on the African continent.
