UWC Sport administrator Andrew Wrankmore has been named among a list of Sport Legends by the Western Cape Government.

Each year the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) honours sportspeople in identified sport codes for the role that they played in ensuring the promotion, growth, development and transformation of sport in their communities.

The First Annual Sport Legends Awards Ceremony was held in 2005 by DCAS and, on 13 December, the 9th cohort of Sport Legends were inducted.

Wrankmore's nomination biography reads: "Andrew started playing squash in 1979 at the Green Point squash courts where he worked part time as a receptionist.

"Under the banner of SACOS, he won the SACOS National Squash Championship four times from 1984 to 1987 and captained the Western Province squash team in 1984 and 1986. Andrew remained a member of the Western Province squash team after the unification of sport from 1993 to 1997, also coaching the Western Province under-19 team from 1995 until 1998.

"From 1998 to 2000, Andrew served on the disciplinary committee of Western Province Squash."

These days, Wrankmore can be found in the UWC Gym, which he manages.

Two further 2013 Sport Legends have UWC connections: Prof Denver Hendricks (a noted squash player and sports administrator who also served as Deputy Dean in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities from 1992-95) and Dr Jantjie Marthinus (who's running exploits earned him UWC's Sportsman of the Year award in 1986).
