UWC will be abuzz this weekend when scores of top beach volleyball clubs from around the country converge at the Bellville campus to take part in the Flying Fish National Beach Volleyball Series.
The event, which kicks off on Friday, 30 January, until 1 February, is the fifth of the seven event series that is hosted around the country and that will culminate in the finals which are popularly known as Queens and Kings of the Beach.
The University team has pinned its hopes on South Africa’s number one pair of Leo Williams and Grant Goldschmidt – the current log leaders in the male category – and the females will be represented by the pair of Bejancke Della and Liezle Peterson. Della, along with the injured Kayla-Lee Provins, won the University Sport South Africa Beach Volleyball trophy in December.
Elmien Cloete, UWC sports administrator responsible for beach volleyball, expects the event to be interesting and competitive as it involves an international team from Czech Republic who have participated in the world series.
But she expects the University team to come out with good results. “The male pair is doing well in the series to be log-leaders, and the female pair can play well together,” Cloete comments.
Kick-off is at midday on Friday, and lots of fun activities will be on offer for spectators.
