The University of the Western Cape’s flagship annual road race Fast and Flat, received a huge leg up when Bestmed Medical Scheme came on board as an official sponsor over a three-year period.
The Fast and Flat race - which involves a 10km road race, a 10km fun run and a 5km fun walk - has become one of the most popular events on the Cape Town athletic calendar. The much-needed financial boost will not only elevate the ever-growing event to new highs, but will also involve funding a bursary for at least one needy student.
Professor Pamela Dube, Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Student Development and Support, welcomed Bestmed’s support, describing it as “a huge vote of confidence to UWC’s upward trajectory in terms of the achievements of the University in general and sport in particular”.
Prof. Dube noted the commitment from the company to fund at least one bursary student as an important element of the partnership. “As much as we recognise sport as pivotal in getting students motivated and having a holistic education experience, academic performance is very important. The willingness to support students in their studies is an important gesture for us, and a potentially life-changing one as well.”
She said the students’ journey on campus is not only the University’s responsibility, but that of society as a whole: “We are happy to have partners such as ourselves to be part of that journey. We will ensure that this partnership grows from strength to strength and you get to see returns on your investment.”
Chris Luyt, Bestmed’s Executive of Marketing and Distribution, responded that it was a privilege and an honour for the company to enter into a partnership with UWC, and expressed his confidence that the partnership would flourish.
“As a company we have been around for 52 years, and obviously aim to be around for another 52 years - and so we can only truly be successful if we can invest in tomorrow’s leaders,” he said.
“Accordingly, our wellness pillars of being safe, of being active, of being fit and - most importantly - of being happy is something that we would love to see in terms of developing and having a positive impact on student life. For Bestmed it’s all about win-win relationships and long term mutually beneficial relationships. We are looking forward to the opportunity to give back to the University, and I believe it will be a fruitful partnership.”
Mandla Gagayi, Director of UWC Sports Administration, committed that UWC Sport would do all in their power to add value to the company, and to the ambassadors of its brand.
This year’s Fast and Flat race, scheduled to take place on 3 June 2017, will be dedicated to its founder, the beloved former UWC Athletics coach Roger Adams, who passed away late last year.
